For Darren - Mimes Recap
Frozen Tundra, CO – Colorado School of Mimes collapsed last night against the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks 3-2. With a man down, David Oberholtzer (OB) scorched a left footer from inside the right box with a minute left to secure the dramatic victory. The goal came 14 minutes after the obligatory red-card call against FLC. Staunch defense and controlling mid-field play kept Mimes off balance until the fatal blow. The futility continues for the Borediggers. They are 0-7-1 in their last 8 games against the Fort, winning the last time on Oct. 24, 2004, nearly – carry the four, square root of 8 – three years. Last Friday night, it was Jamie “JC” Cunningham who opened the scoring at 9:05. After early Skyhawk pressure, they won a corner, taken by Tom Settle. The ball bounced right of goal, where JC stood his ground against a Mimes defender, who dramatically flopped over his leg. With only the goalie to beat, JC zipped a low drive to the far post. 1-0 Fort. On the ensuing kickoff, it appeared Mimes had scored, but the center ref ruled the Mimes player had cheated with a handball control. The correct call, combined with the correct non-call on JC’s goal sent Mimes coach Frank Frankenstein flipping out. Frank received a yellow card. JC’s goal stood until the half. Five minutes in to the second half, Mimes scored. So what? Ten minutes later, Mimes scored their second of the night. 2-1 Mimes. Yawn. Fort kept playing well on the frozen tundra, searching for a soft green spot on the worst field in all of college soccer, except for, perhaps, Ethiopia. Skyhawks defenders braved the depraved conditions to thwart every Mimes thrust near the goal. One assault was met by a fair tackle by JC which was judged by the center ref to be flagrant. JC’s second yellow resulted in his dismissal at the 74th minute. Mimes fans were horrified as FLC faithful used the s-word to voice their displeasure at the marginal call. Give the FLC fans credit, though. At least they did light up in a non-tobacco educational facility. How could they? No grass, dude. Down a man, the Hawks fought ahead. They won a couple of corner kicks late, playing three men in the box to the Mimes eight. After Kieran almost schooled the entire Mimes D, OB sent another corner toward the goal. It bounced back to him, and with nifty moves mesmerizing the Mimes D, finished what Fort had come to accomplish. For my money, I’d like to se OB get at least five chances a game to use his left foot, either on set pieces or run of play. Teach him to get it on frame, and he’s deadly from long range. Good things happen when you challenge a goalie or bonk it off the post with missiles from 30+ yards. Frankenstein, sporting as ever, gave the FLC fans a wave as he walked off the field. Said Frank, “Losing is always tough. Losing to Ft. Lewis just makes it worse.” Asked about his reputation as the league hothead, Frank replied, “The counseling seems to be helping. I only got a yellow card tonight.” This Fort win should loom large if they meet Mimes again in the RMAC playoffs.
