What's the script?
I know as I'm writing this you are all tucked up in bed sleeping peacefully, well some anyway. However I am up on the other side of the world, (with a hang over) but still able to ponder the future of FLC soccer. Both men and women alike have entertained us this year but where does this take us. With Tim we have a vastly experienced coach who has just finish his first year at the helm, an RMAC tourney win and a berth at nationals. Things look good but will he stay? Then Damo on the womens side has done what everyone knew he could. In the record books for all time as the coach who took the FLC womens team to their first national tourney berth. The side is young and will show us more in the coming years but I ask the question again will he stay?
I am looking at the college and seeing things here which seem to be happening too many times. Fort Lewis is able to employ up and coming coaches. Jeremy Fishbien, Jeremy Gunn, Paddy Patton Shearer, Shelly Aaland, Bob Hoffman. But doesn't seem to be able to keep them. Why? What is wrong? You have highly competitive coaches that want to compete at the highest of levels, prove they can do a job and then some other institution takes them away. Why? I am looking at what Sir Alex Ferguson has done at Manchester United in his long term and am now thinking that the Fort needs to be a place the best coaches want to go and stay not just use as a stepping stone on their way to bigger and better jobs. It can be a haven for the best sport in D2 across America.
I have an integral understanding of the working of the athletic department and the college. I understand the first and foremost thing the college is there for is to give a liberal education but I also feel that the athletic department is a major part of the education that each student should receive. By very good coaches continuously leaving for other positions, I wonder why the college can not do more to make these highly influential characters hunger for life long careers at the Fort. So I ask again, what does or more aptly where is the future of FLC soccer going with Tim and Damo? Will it be another fantasy ride for a couple of years before they are tempted somewhere else because the Fort (being as liberal as it ) won't stick it's neck out and cultivate the success's on its door own step.
