SKYHAWK
ATHLETICS TO HOST ALUMNI SOCCER & VOLLEYBALL GAMES, SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION
ON AUGUST 23
Fort
Lewis College Director of Athletics Kelly
Higgins announced today the schedule for the Athletic Alumni Weekend, to
be held on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Activities include the women’s
soccer alumnae game at 1 p.m. at Dirks Field, men’s soccer alumni game at 3
p.m. at Dirks Field, volleyball alumnae game at 5 p.m. in Whalen Gymnasium, and
scholarship reception at 8 p.m. at the Irish Embassy Pub, located at the corner
of 9th St. and Main Ave.
Each alumni game features a
Skyhawk team coming off a championship-winning season. The 2007 volleyball
squad captured the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title with
a record of 22-8 overall and 17-2 in RMAC matches. The 2007 men’s soccer team
won the RMAC tournament title and was 15-6-1 overall and 10-3-1 in league
games. The 2007 women’s soccer team also won the RMAC tournament title and was
14-5-3 overall and 6-4-2 in league games. All three advanced to the NCAA
Division II playoffs.
The scholarship reception
costs $10 and features a variety of Irish finger foods complements of Skyhawk
Athletics and the Fort Lewis College Alumni Association. Among the appetizers
to be served are baked goat cheese dip served with toasted pita bread;
clonakilty mushrooms, salmon fingers, potato wedges, shrimp ballyvaughan, mini
burgers, chicken sandwiches, steak sandwiches and Mediterranean sandwiches. A
cash bar featuring specially-priced adult beverages is available.
All proceeds from the event
will go toward the Peppy Seale Volleyball Endowment, Fredrick Brothers Men’s
Soccer Scholarship and Jaymee Carozza Women’s Soccer Scholarship. The event is
being used to kick off alumni scholarship drives for the Fredrick and Carozza scholarships.
The Seale Endowment has already released its initial endowment goal of $25,000,
but efforts are underway to grow this fund.
Additionally, soccer alumni
will sell booster t-shirts that feature the Skyhawk soccer badge and Irish
Embassy logo. Wear the t-shirt into the Irish Embassy on soccer game days and
receive discounted beverages throughout the season.
